Different Coverage Plans for Different Needs
Medicare Advantage is both similar to other Medicare plans and different in some key ways. You will need to have an active Original Medicare plan in order to sign up for Medicare Advantage. The two plans work together, and what Medicare Advantage does not cover for you, the Original Medicare plan will cover. However, Medicare Advantage is sold by private insurers like Humana, Aetna, Cigna and others. Whichever company you buy your plan from will then become your primary Medicare provider.
Medicare Advantage goes beyond the basic Original Medicare plan, however. It will cover you for all of your emergency medical care and anything that is considered to be urgently needed. Those can be some hefty expenses that you would normally have to pay for out of pocket. If you have ever been to the emergency room or been transported in an ambulance and had to pay for that service, then you know how costly those can be. But you’ll need those services at certain times in your life, so having coverage for them is going to provide you with some peace of mind and powerful protection.
That kind of coverage is especially important for seniors, who never know what kind of medical problems they may have to face and who can expect to face more and more medical issues as they grow older.
What we have told you about so far is simply the basic Medicare Advantage plan. The coverage for Original Medicare (parts A and B), for emergency medical services and for urgently needed care are all going be included in your Advantage plan no matter what version of the plan you sign up for.
If you want to get some extra coverage, though, then you can sign up for a Medicare Advantage Part D plan. This is available from most insurance companies, and it will cover you for Medicare Part D, which is a prescription drug plan. You get coverage for name brand and generic drugs, enjoying partial coverage on some medications and full coverage on others. Usually, the more common, cheaper drugs are the ones that get the most coverage with this type of plan, but the specifics of the plan can vary from one insurer to another.
You can also sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan that will cover you for routine checkups with your doctor. This plan can cover checkups for general wellness, vision and hearing. With this coverage, you can also get new prescription glasses or a hearing aid.
There are some Medicare Advantage plans that combine these different versions and give you even greater coverage. Check with your local insurance companies to see what’s on offer and what could save you the most money.

Medicare Advantage Network Options
There is one major difference between Medicare Advantage and other types of Medicare insurance. You won’t always get full coverage when you go to a medical facility that accepts Medicare. It’s not that simple to get the coverage promised by your plan. You also have to go to a medical facility that is part of your insurance company’s network. Each insurance company has a network of clinics, hospitals, doctors and such that they operate. These are healthcare providers who have agreed to honor that specific insurance company’s plans. If you go outside that network for care, then you will not get the full coverage of your insurance company’s Advantage plan.
There are a few different ways you can handle the network problem. You could sign up for a simple HMO plan, which will cover you only on the network. It offers only network coverage and does so at a low, affordable price. If you want coverage outside the network, then you will have to choose one of the other options:
PPO – This kind of Advantage plan covers you both on and off the network. It gives you full coverage for any healthcare services you get on the network, so long as they are included in your Advantage plan’s terms. You get partial coverage for those same services when you go outside of the network.
PFFS – This is a less common plan type, and it will cover you fully on the network as well. It doesn’t cost as much as the PPO plan, because even though you get some coverage when you go off the network, you have to pay an agreed upon price per service rather than a higher premium on your plan.
Special Needs – This kind of Advantage plan isn’t going to be available to everyone. It gives you greater coverage and lower rates and is only open to those who have special needs and who qualify for Medicaid.
