Medicare Advantage Plans NY 2020
Advantage plans for New York residents offer so many different options to have your healthcare expenses covered. These plans come with powerful coverage that goes far beyond what an Original Medicare plan can do, so many seniors within the state will be signing up for Medicare Advantage plans NY 2020.
These are insurance policies that cover seniors for all of Original Medicare (except hospice care) as well as for any medically necessary treatments and services that are classified as emergency or urgently needed services. These plans are sold by private insurers, and there are numerous insurance providers in New York state that sell these plans. These insurers can pick their rates on the plans and decide what lineup of plans they want to offer. Let’s take a look at what’s available and help you figure to if Medicare Advantage is right for you.
Your Medical Expenses Covered
We told you already what coverage you can expect from some of the Medicare Advantage plans, but those we mentioned so far are only for the basic plan. That’s all guaranteed coverage you get with every Medicare Advantage plan, taking care of emergency medical care, urgently needed medical care and pretty much everything already covered by Original Medicare (Parts A and B of Medicare).
That’s the basic plans, and many New York insurers will sell higher coverage Advantage plans. These larger, more extensive plans will cover you for not just the basics but also for the cost of Medicare Part D drug plans, or for routine checkups. Most New York insurers offer a lineup of plans for you to pick from, so you should be able to find one that fits you well.
Some of them offer a bunch of great customer benefits on top of the medical coverage. These benefits can help you to pay less for gym membership, medical counselling, doctor’s appointments, elective treatments and other nonessential medical services. They can also cover you for transport to doctor’s office visits, at-home meals, fitness plans, healthy living coaching and more. Check out the list of free and subscription-based perks that each company offers before you sign up for their plan. You won’t know what you are missing out on until you do that.

Are You Eligible for a Medicare Advantage Plan?
Advantage plans will only be available to those seniors who meet the eligibility requirements. This generally means that you either qualify for disability or you have a current, active Original Medicare plan. Once you have that Medicare plan active, you can apply for Medicare Advantage during the enrollment period. This period starts at the same time each year- October 15th. That date is subject to change, so check with us for the Open Enrollment date before you start applying for your plan. The enrollment window will close on December 7th, so you have until then to get in your application for an Advantage plan.
If you aren’t sure about the eligibility requirements and if you meet them, then feel free to give us a call. We will happily answer your questions or help you any way that we can.
Know the Network
There will be limits as to where you can get coverage from your plan. Some medical facilities such as clinics, pharmacies and the like will not be part of your insurer’s network. That means that they do not honor its plans. You cannot get full coverage from your plan if you go to a medical facility that is not part of their network.
What most New Yorkers will do is choose an HMO Advantage plan. This gives them full coverage while they are on the network and does not cover them at all anywhere else.
Other seniors will choose the PPO option. This covers them completely within the network as well, but it does more than that. It also covers them partially if they go outside the network for their healthcare. Imagine how helpful that would be if you lived somewhere that doesn’t have any network coverage or where your network coverage is sparse.
Before you choose one of the Medicare Advantage plans for NY in 2020, you should take time to consider whether you need a PPO or HMO plan. You can talk to us about any concerns you have and get your questions answered so that you can make a confident, informed decision.
