Your Choices for California Advantage Plans
One of the good things about Medicare Advantage plans is that there are a few different options to pick from. You could go with the basic plan, which covers you for all of Medicare Part A and Part B, all emergency care and all healthcare that is considered to be urgently needed. This is what every Advantage plan includes, regardless of which version of the plan you get.
The other Advantage plans top that basic coverage with some coverage for either Medicare Part D prescription drug cover or coverage for checkups. Some plans include both types of coverage.
You also shave some different network option you can choose from. The one that most people will go with is called an HMO. This is a cheap and simple plan that offers full coverage on the network but no coverage outside of it. That’s a pretty good plan for anyone who lives in a network area.
If you live outside the network or frequently travel outside of it, then you will want to go with a PPO plan, probably. This one costs you a bit more, but it covers you better. It will provide partial coverage while you are outside the network and full coverage within the network.
Medicare Advantage in California
The rules for eligibility and coverage with Medicare Advantage are the same in California as they are anywhere else in the country. You can expect to be eligible for these plans when you reach age 65, and you can sign up for these plans during the Open Enrollment period this year.
That period starts on October 15th and runs until December 7th. During that period, you get easy approval for plans and guaranteed low rates, so it is your best time to apply for one of these plans. We urge you to look at the choices for Medicare Advantage California 2020 plans before then so that you know what to get when the time comes.
Advantage plans are sold by all sorts of different insurance companies. You may recognize some of the larger ones, such as Mutual of Omaha, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare and Blue Cross Blue Shield. These and other insurers offer their own versions of Medicare Advantage. The coverage may not differ much from one plan to the next or from one provider to the next, but the prices sure do. You can compare those prices right here on our site, and we make that very easy to do. We will provide you with a list of plans and rates for any search you perform on our site. This lets you compare prices among the providers.
Once you sign up for an Advantage plan, you will be covered for an entire year. You want to be sure you pick a plan that meet your needs for that time, so try not to be short sighted with your choice. Do You Need Medicare Advantage Plans?
The Advantage plans tend to offer a lot more coverage than competing health insurance plans. They cover you for all of Original Medicare, plus even more than that. This means that they can be used as a replacement for Original Medicare. You can use them to replace other plans as well. If they include Part D, you could cancel a Part D plan that you have and sign up for the combo plan that has both basic Advantage coverage and prescription drug cover.
If you have a Medicare Supplement plan, then an Advantage plan could replace that as well, providing a lot of similar coverage but also covering you in new ways. You will not be able to stay signed up for your Supplement plans and receive cover from an Advantage plan at the same time, since they overlap with one another. You have to choose one or the other.
Medicare Advantage plans are not the best choice for everyone, we know. There are other insurance options that you may want to consider, but we don’t think you will find anything that offers as much coverage as an Advantage plan for as good of a price. The Advantage plans often have premiums that cost you $0 per month, and you really can’t beat that. We suggest taking some time to look at all of your choices, and if you are not sure what those choices are, then you can always talk to our team and get some expert advice.
Medicare Advantage in California for 2020 isn’t that different from anywhere else in the United States. You have a few different local companies that you won’t find elsewhere, and the rates are going to be based on the cost of living for the area, but other than that, they are pretty similar to what you get elsewhere. Just like everywhere else in the country, you could save money on your healthcare by choosing the right Medicare Advantage plan.
