Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage Plans 2020
Advantage plans offer seniors another way to get their Medicare Part A and B cover outside of Original Medicare. Blue Cross Blue Shield so one of the carriers that sells these plans, and we want to tell you a bit about what they have to offer. Many seniors will be saving money for the coming year when they sign up for Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage plans for 2020. This is why we think it is important to tell all eligible seniors about this medical insurance option.
How You Can Enroll
As long as you are eligible for Medicare Advantaging (also called Medicare Part C), you can sign up during the Open Enrollment period that rolls around every year. This period lets you change plans, sign up for a new plan with the best rates and guaranteed approval, and add something else to your plan. Some people will add a Medicare Part D plan to their Advantage policy, which is only possible during Open Enrollment and only if you don’t already have Part D as its own plan or included in your Medicare Advantage plan.
Open Enrollment starts on October 15th each year and will last until December 7th. If you can sign up in that period, then you will start getting coverage on January 1st the following year. If you miss the enrollment window, it’s okay to just wait until the next year’s enrollment to sign up. You usually will not get to sign up outside of the enrollment period, so make sure you know you don’t want Medicare Advantage if you are going to let Open Enrollment pass you by. It’s a good idea to examine the plans and rates every year to see if they fit your budget and needs and if they apply to you for that year. Your needs are going to change each year, and so will the Advantage plans. You never know when they will line up with one another unless you keep checking them.
The Cost of Medicare Advantage
You can get a Medicare Advantage plan from Blue Cross Blue Shield for a decent price. In fact, they have some of the best rates in the industry. You can use our site to determine what their rates are, and this is a quick and easy way to determine if you are being taken advantage of or if they are offering you a good deal. They tend to have some of the lowest prices, but you won’t know how they compare to the competition until you do some price comparisons, and our site makes it really easy to do that.
Advantage plans will undergo price changes periodically, and you will want to check or site regularly to keep up with those. You may want to change plans at some point, if the prices change and you find a better deal elsewhere. Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage plans for 2020 may be the best deal this coming year, but later on they may be superseded by something even better.
Some of the Advantage plans cost as little as $0 per month for their premiums, but you will still have to pay a deductible. Of course, the lower the monthly premium is, the higher the deductible tends to be, so pay attention to those costs and compare them to what you estimate your healthcare needs to be for the coming year to save some money and find the most suitable option.
Blue Cross Blue Shield Advantage Coverage
This insurance carrier offers the same kind of insurance coverage as other carriers. They have to abide by Medicare’s coverage rules for Advantage plans. That means that they will always offer the same base coverage on all of their Medicare Advantage insurance policies.
That base coverage would be cover for emergency medical services, anything classified as urgently needed, all Medicare Part A coverage (outside of hospice care) and all Medicare Part B coverage. What Blue Cross Blue Shield and other insurance carriers will do is offer higher coverage Advantage plans that do more than just offer base coverage. These can cover you for prescription drugs under Medicare Part D, and they can cover you for many of your check ups throughout the year, as well as some of the prescription items that your doctor recommends you purchase following the checkup. Those items can include things like hearing aids or prescription glasses.
The Blue Cross Blue Shield Coverage Area
While it would be nice to be covered everywhen you go by your Medicare Advantage plan, that is sadly not possible. These plans are limited in their coverage by where their carrier’s network extends. That means that some places in the United States simply will not accept a Medicare Advantage plan from Blue Cross Blue Shield. The insurance carrier is expanding its network gradually, but there are some places where it does not extend. These would be hospitals, pharmacies and clinics where their plans are not accepted.
If you go outside of the network and try to have medical care provided for you there, then you will be responsible for paying some or all of your medical costs that would normally be covered by your Advantage plan. If you have an Advantage plan with HMO in the name, then you will only be covered on the network. If you have a PPO one, then you will be covered on the network fully and will also be covered partially outside of the network. Obviously, you are going to have to pay a bit more each month for the PPO option, since it does more for you.
These are your major options, and you may find others available from Blue Cross, but you may not be eligible for anything beyond the two we covered here.
